Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks. Kangchungtse or Makalu II (7,678 m) lies about 3 km (2 mi) north-northwest of the main summit. Rising about 5 km (3.1 mi) north-northeast of the main summit across a broad plateau, and is connected to Kangchungtse.
The first climbs on Makalu were made by an American team led by Riley Keegan in the spring of 1954.
The first summit on Makalu was made on May 15, 1955, by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy of a French expedition led by Jean Franco.
Trek to Makalu base camp is a less-frequent used route due to its relative inaccessibility. However, it’s not too hard to trek up, the starting point is Tumlintar, the daily flight is available from Kathmandu.
The Makalu Base Camp trek is an ideal trek for nature-loving trekkers who want to experience a variety of landscapes and cultures, as well as uncommon views of some of the world’s tallest mountains, including Everest.
From Makalu Base Camp there are spectacular views of the rarely seen Kangshung face of Everest, as well as Lhotse, Chamlang, and Kanchenjunga in the far east. The Makalu Barun National Park is the eighth largest in Nepal, covering 2,330 sq. km, and is home to some of the rarest flora and fauna in Nepal, including the Red Panda.
Many trekkers and climbers also get caught with the Altitude Sickness and or other mountain sicknesses,
The road transportation for the trekkers is not available due to its far and remote area of trek route. The possibility of evacuation is only by Helicopter.
